Hug & Learn Little Leap Learning Game

by LeapFrog

Awards: Winner of a 1999 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Award

Product Review
Ribbit! This huggable froggy is one great learning tool--teaching toddlers and preschoolers the alphabet, phonics, numbers, colors, reasoning, and manners, no less. When kids press the letters on his shirt or the numbers on his webbed fingers, he says the selection aloud. Little ones can also play in search mode to learn letter and number names and sounds. Yet another activity lets kids experiment with letter and number sequence. The Hug & Learn frog engages kids with games like "Hide & Seek," "Say Please," "Name Game," and even sings the alphabet and a counting song. Although this little guy is far from wearing on the eardrums, the auto shutoff is a wonderful feature that allows kids to take their smart friend with them into dreamland (and ensures longer battery life). The frog requires four AA batteries, which are included.

Rescue Heroes Quick Response Voice Tech Jet

by Fisher-Price

Product Review
Never fear, the Voice Tech Jet is here! Bring preschool rescue missions to life in this shiny blue flyer that includes three sets of wings, real jet sounds, flashing lights, and snazzy Rescue Heroes detailing. Slide Jake Justice, or any of the Voice Tech Rescue Heroes (dolls not included) into the high-tech cockpit, and you'll hear him give over 100 special instructions, such as "This is Jake Justice. We need an airlift," to his fellow Rescue Heroes or perhaps to the Command Center. Fold down the special handle with a cleverly hidden sound button on the jet's belly, and make the jet dive, dip, spin, or accelerate, complete with realistic sounds. Swoop down and pick up Wendy Waters, Billy Blazes, or Jack Hammer with the special hook that attaches to each Rescue Hero's back. Mission impossible becomes a thing of the past. Requires three AA batteries, not included.

Turtle Picnic

by Mattel

Editorial Review

Who started the rumor that turtles are slow? Whoever it was obviously never saw them attending a picnic. And with the Turtle Picnic game from Fisher-Price, youngsters ages 3 to 7 can get in on the fast-moving fun. The equipment in this game of matching "colorful snacks to the turtles' backs" includes four cute, plastic flip-top turtles, each with a different color hidden under its back. Players take turns revealing the colored snacks (carrots, grapes and bananas) on the underside of the 18 Lily Pad cards, and trying to match a color to a turtle. It's a wonderfully clever marine twist on the traditional Memory card game--all the more so when certain Lily Pads allow players to messily rearrange the plastic turtles to foil other players who've memorized which color is where. There are also rules for a cool, more advanced game wherein players must match two colored Lily Pads before trying to match a tortoise. After all, why should teddy bears have all the fun at a picnic? --Tony Mason

Poppin' Mr. Potato Head

by Hasbro Creative Playthings

Editorial Review
Holy potato! It's not enough that Mr. Potato Head is a spud of a thousand faces if his friends have to remove his face every time they play with him. Now that problem is solved... Poppin Mr. Potato Head just blows away his facial features at the push of a special button! Whether he was a spying spud, an austerely mustached au gratin, or a chapeaued potato chip before, the after effects of Mr. Potato Head's facial parts popping are almost more fun. He simply loses his face when you push the yellow button at his feet. He even voices his approval of your actions ("Let's do that again!"), and up to 20 other choice phrases ("Good gravy!") that'll keep the whole family laughing. It's not traumatizing in any way, but definitely a jolter the first few times you try it. --Diane Beall

Trouble

by Milton Bradley

Product Description:
Need an icebreaker? Want to work out some aggression without shin guards and helmets? Popomatic Trouble, Milton Bradley's classic race-and-chase game, is guaranteed to bring out your competitive side. Try to outstrip your opponents as you race your pawns around the colorful plastic board to safety. Should you have the good fortune to land on a space occupied by another player, you can send him reeling back to start, where he must wait for a six to pop up (literally) on the capricious dice bubble in the center of the board. Once liberated, your foe is free to reciprocate--now you're in Trouble.

The crystal ball on which the fates of all rest, a.k.a. the Popomatic Dice Bubble, is the genius behind this game, and is one reason it has become a classic. Encased in its bubble, the die never goes flying, rolls off the table, or gets lost. Simple to learn and exciting to play, Popomatic Trouble is a game that never loses its thrill. Popomatic Trouble is for two to four players. --Julie Ubben

Jenga

by Milton Bradley

Editorial Review
Show your steady hands and elementary structural knowledge in a battle against gravity when you play Jenga, a game of luck and precision. First, assemble the 54 rectangular, hardwood blocks--smooth and shaped just right for stacking--into a three-piece-wide, 18-story tower. Then take turns removing the three-inch blocks one at time, using caution to keep the structure intact while stacking the removed pieces back on the top of the tower. As the tower rises, its base begins to teeter--one wrong move and it collapses in a heap! Game over.
Jenga allows adults to play architect and children to perfect their stacking skills and hand-eye coordination. There is no limit on the number of participants--it can even be played solo. But beware: Jenga can be addictive. The instructions declare a 36-story structure to be the mark of a real pro. How tall can you go? --Cate Bick

Guess Who?

by Milton Bradley

Editorial Review
A wonderful blend of deduction with a form of 20 Questions. Two players try to deduce the identity of their opponent's "Mystery Person." Using game boards with 48 frames apiece and an equal number of cards displaying character faces, players ask one another yes or no questions that help narrow the pool of possibilities. Through process of elimination, the identity of the Mystery Person slowly becomes evident. As kids' skill levels grow, their questions become more strategic, allowing them to solve the mystery faster and faster. The faces on the cards are cheerful and clever and designed to give subgroups among the 48 characters just enough similarities to challenge players. --Tom Keogh

Cranium Cadoo for Kids

by Cranium

Editorial Review
Cadoo is the funky fusion of tic-tac-toe, general knowledge, sculpting skill, and scavenger hunt designed for kids by the brainiacs who brought us the left side/right side frenzy of Cranium. Operating solo or in combo with others, players attempt to line up four of their jack-like tokens on the groovily colored grid board by fulfilling a myriad of tasks in an array of categories familiar to Craniacs. Whether attempting to sculpt a taco out of the included clay or guessing which of Milky Way, Butterfinger, or Twix is longer, cadets find that correct answers and successful missions--can you bring back both something smaller than your big toe, and something bigger than your foot, in less than a minute?--put them one-quarter of the way closer to their Cadoo. With its elements of strategy, its elegantly funny graphics, and some downright serious silliness, there isn't a lot of Cadon't in Cadoo. --Tony Mason

Outburst Jr.

by Parker Brothers

Editorial Review
Go ahead, blurt it out! Name all the Jell-O flavors you can think of in 60 seconds. How many books by Judy Blume can you remember? How about musical instruments you blow? Motor mouths excel at this fast-thinking, noisy game. Each team is given one minute to shout out answers that might--or might not--be listed on the topic card. For every correct answer, the team scores one point. A cool viewer makes the invisible answers on the topic card magically appear. With 400 topics, bonus points, and options for younger or older players--even adults can join in--prepare for hours of explosive fun! The game includes two decks of topic cards, a viewer/card holder, a score card with scoring glides, a 60-second timer, a bonus number die, and very friendly instructions with great advice for being good sports. For two or more players in teams.
It has been brought to our attention that some boxes of Outburst Jr. contain a single question card from the adult version of the game. The contents of this card may be considered unsuitable for children. --Emilie Coulter

Taboo

by Milton Bradley

Editorial Review
It sounds so simple: get your team to name common words without voicing a few choice descriptors. But could you describe a wristwatch without mentioning time, wrist, or clock? Taboo rewards those who think--and speak--fast. The team that correctly identifies as many words as possible in a minute (measured with an hourglass timer) wins. If a member of the opposing team, armed with the blaring buzzer, catches the clue giver using any of the taboo words, a point is deducted from the group's score. It's a good idea to separate people who know each other well, because their familiarity can be too great an advantage. If the clue is spinach, prompting with "Mom made this every Monday" just doesn't seem fair, though it is permissible according to the rules. Playing Taboo requires an AA battery and a sense of humor--you'll need them both! The timer is included. Taboo is for four or more players. --Leah Ball

Scattergories

by Milton Bradley

Editorial Review
Scattergories is a fast-paced word game that's a real crowd pleaser. Each player takes a category list with 12 categories--such as vegetable, state, president, things you throw away--and must write down the name of one item that fits into each category. Sounds easy enough, but each item has to begin with a specific letter that is determined when the 20-sided die is rolled. For instance, you roll the letter "R." Your answer list for the above categories might look something like this: rutabaga, Rhode Island, Roosevelt, rubbish, etc. You have to think fast, because a round lasts only 3 minutes! Players score points for each unique answer. --Alison Golder

LeapPad
by LeapFrog
From Imaginarium.com Toyologists & Amazon.com
Editorial Review

This talking book comes with an interactive "magic pen" that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as "Strike one!" for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. --Gail Hudson

Manufacturer Description
What's more magical than learning to read? How about a completely interactive experience with real paper books! With the touch of a magic wand, LeapFrog's patented NearTouch technology inspires children to love reading by bringing stories to life.
