Review:
The clicker licker pop is a fun toy that may be used clinically for
several reasons. In general, it may be used to address issues with fluency,
articulation/phonology, and oral motor skills. First, It is a highly
reinforcing item with a musical "clicker" which may be used for setting the
pace of speech. This can be "clicked" in a slow rhythm to demonstrate
reducing the rate of production of each syllable of a word. The adult will
model single syllables (in multi syllable words and phrases), along with
each "click", and the child imitates. This is to reinforce the
identification and use of all syllables (so as not to delete a weak syllable
which may have an impact on intelligibility such as "tephone" or "bana" for
"telephone, banana"). Also, it may be used to produce a syllable
fluently with a reduced rate if the child has difficulty maintaining fluency
in speech, as related to timing.
Secondly, the whistle may be used for
breath support issues, to build/control a steady stream of air for voicing/nonvoicing,
oral airflow, breath support and control of breath needed for lengthy
phonation and/or verbalization fluently.
Finally, the lollipop may be used for
tongue, and lip exercises. For example, the child is asked to reach for the
lollipop (held outside of the mouth ) with his/her tongue without moving
lips, jaw, head, or body to isolate and move the tongue. This can be done
with straight extension, lateralization ,or tongue tip elevation. It can be
used for lip exercises such as lip press/holding candy with lips only, etc.

Review:
These are a fun and delicious way to address oral motor, and respiration
skills for speech development. I like the whistle as a tool for such things
as lip rounding, jaw control, tongue retraction, and sustained control of
the respiratory muscles used in speech.
For example, I may ask the child to blow
loudly, or sustain the exhale as long as possible. It can also be used out
of the mouth like a lollipop for oral motor skills such as the ability to
use the tongue independently from the head/body, jaw, and/or lips, and
increase range of motion. For example, I may have the child reach for the
lollipop with his/her tongue only without moving the body/face. I may ask
them to hold it there, or extend/retract the tongue repeatedly. I also use
it for tongue lateralization, and elevation activities as well. For example,
keep the head/neck straight and move the tongue only to each side of the
mouth ("wag" the tongue) while reaching for the lollipop. I may do the same
with the mouth in open position and move only the tongue up and down,
(without moving the jaw, lips, head, or body).

These delicious treats are used in my therapy sessions for not
only a delicious reinforcement item, but can be sprayed on
"toothettes" or other oral motor items as a flavorful way of
addressing oral-motor skills. Children love the flavors, but use
with caution, because they truly produce a colorful mouth! I
always use a gloved hand and have a tissue/napkin nearby. May
change color of oral motor items.
