The clicker licker pop is a fun toy that may be used clinically for
several reasons. In general, it may be used to address issues with fluency,
articulation/phonology, and oral motor skills. First, It is a highly
reinforcing item with a musical "clicker" which may be used for setting the
pace of speech. This can be "clicked" in a slow rhythm to demonstrate
reducing the rate of production of each syllable of a word. The adult will
model single syllables (in multi syllable words and phrases), along with
each "click", and the child imitates. This is to reinforce the
identification and use of all syllables (so as not to delete a weak syllable
which may have an impact on intelligibility such as "tephone" or "bana" for
"telephone, banana"). Also, it may be used to produce a syllable
fluently with a reduced rate if the child has difficulty maintaining fluency
in speech, as related to timing.
Secondly, the whistle may be used for
breath support issues, to build/control a steady stream of air for voicing/nonvoicing,
oral airflow, breath support and control of breath needed for lengthy
phonation and/or verbalization fluently.
Finally, the lollipop may be used for
tongue, and lip exercises. For example, the child is asked to reach for the
lollipop (held outside of the mouth ) with his/her tongue without moving
lips, jaw, head, or body to isolate and move the tongue. This can be done
with straight extension, lateralization ,or tongue tip elevation. It can be
used for lip exercises such as lip press/holding candy with lips only, etc.
