Glad
Monster, Sad Monster : A Book About Feelings
by Anne Miranda
(Illustrator), Ed Emberley (Illustrator) |
Synopsis
Children who lack the vocabulary to distinguish the emotions they're
feeling may find some comfort in this book, which makes use of masks to
unmask feelings. Each spread shows little brightly colored monsters acting
out different emotions--pink monsters cut out valentines and bake cookies
to express love, yellow monsters play ball and open birthday presents in
the name of happiness--while a gatefold page reveals a big mask of
whatever emotion is covered in that spread. The eyes and noses are punched
out, so children can hold those pages up and ``wear'' the mask. It's a
good idea, but easier in theory; the book is heavy for the young children
at whom the book is aimed, and older ones will find it hard to put on the
mask, read the book, and keep the pages intact; institutions should expect
rips and stock multiple copies. The book has a use, whether teaching the
names of emotions, or helping children express them.

Go
Away, Big Green Monster!
by Ed Emberley |
Synopsis
By turning these stiff, die-cut pages, even very young children can
assemble a green monster with ``two big yellow eyes...a long blue
nose...[and] a big red mouth with sharp white teeth...'' and then make it
go away again, feature by feature. Emberley, a Caldecott medalist whose
delightful drawing books demonstrate a combination of rudimentary forms to
create a world of images, uses simple shapes in bright colors to build a
scowling, cartoonish face that seems to float against the solid black
field- -scary, but deliciously so. A satisfying game that may also allay
some nighttime fears.

The
Very Hungry Caterpillar Board Book
by Eric Carle |
Synopsis
"In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf." So begins
Eric Carle's modern classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. More than
12 million copies of this book have been sold in its original, full-sized
edition, and the beloved tale of science and gluttony has been translated
into 20 languages. This five-by-four-inch miniature edition is truly tiny,
with tiny type, but it is a nice size for small hands to hold and flip
through the pictures. Despite its diminished state, the book is complete
in every detail, following the ravenous caterpillar's path as he eats his
way through one apple (and the pages of the book itself) on Monday, two
pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, and so on, through cherry pie
and sausage--until he is really fat and has a stomachache. And no doubt
you know what happens next! Kids love butterfly metamorphosis stories, and
this popular favorite teaches counting and the days of the week, too. A
fun gift package for caterpillar fans. (Baby to preschool)

If
You Give a Mouse a Cookie
by Felicia
Bond (Illustrator), Laura
Joffe Numeroff |
Synopsis
Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out an
energetic young boy? Well, if you're going to go around giving an
exuberantly bossy rodent a cookie, you'd best be prepared to do one or two
more favors for it before your day is through. For example, he'll
certainly need a glass of milk to wash down that cookie, won't he? And you
can't expect him to drink the milk without a straw, can you? By the time
our hero is finished granting all the mouse's very urgent requests--and
cleaning up after him--it's no wonder his head is becoming a bit heavy.
Laura Joffe Numeroff's tale of warped logic is a sure-fire winner in the
giggle-generator category. But concerned parents can rest assured, there's
even a little education thrown in for good measure: underneath the folly
rest valuable lessons about cause and effect. Felicia Bond's hilarious
pictures are full of subtle, fun details. Fans will be happy to know that
this dynamic author-illustrator pair teamed up again for If You Give a
Moose a Muffin and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. (Great read aloud, ages 4
to 8)

Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish (Bright & Early Bath Book)
by Dr. Seuss |
Synopsis
"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on
your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in
this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While
many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles,
Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both
entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful
vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly
from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with
one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these
ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the book's original publication
in 1960--so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they
are learning to read! (Ages 4 to 8) --

Maisy's Pop-Up Playhouse
by Lucy Cousins |
Editorial Reviews-Amazon.com
Gaily tied up with two red ribbons, Lucy
Cousin's unusual, delightful, virtually wordless "book" is in fact a triple
pop-up. When you open the covers (vertically, like a door, rather than
horizontally), you are introduced to this endearing rodent's kitchen,
bathroom, and bedroom, like three little dollhouses. In the boldly colorful
kitchen is a pop-up table and chairs, and a pop-out-from-the-wall set of
cabinets, complete with a range that opens to reveal a baking pie, and many
other distractions. Turn the "page" and you come to a bathroom complete with
a mirror on the wall, a liftable toilet seat, and a little figure of Maisy
to stand in the shower stall. Each room comes with a sheet containing
cut-out objects like clothing and small furnishings, to be arranged at will.
In the bedroom, a tab turns a window scene from day to night and back again,
and a clothes chest has real sliding drawers. Maisy is a character small
children can fall in love with. Ingenious. (Ages 3 to 6) --Richard Farr

Ten Apples Up on Top
by Theodore
Le Sieg, Theo Lesieg, Roy McKie (Illustrator) |
Editorial Reviews-Amazon.com
Since 1961, Ten Apples up on
Top has been helping preschoolers learn to count and read
simultaneously. Simple illustrations and even simpler rhymes
make this apple-balancing competition between a dog, a
tiger, and a lion a fun, easy place to practice sight words
and phonics. Siblings can even take turns reading phrases
like "Seven apples up on top. I am so good they will not
drop." The inevitable tumbling crash is a great climax for
busy toddlers to enjoy, and parents will appreciate the
cooperative lesson the last page offers. (Preschool to early
reader) --Jill Lightner

Tuesday
by David
Wiesner |
Editorial Reviews-Amazon.com
"Tuesday evening, around eight"--a deceptively mundane
beginning for what proves to be a thrilling, miraculous, and
surreal amphibian journey. Slowly and quietly on this
particular Tuesday, a few fat frogs begin hovering over a
swamp, riding lily pads like magic carpets. Clearly
satisfied and comfortable, the floating frogs are as serene
as little green buddhas. Gradually, the flying fleet grows
in momentum and number, sailing over the countryside and
into an unsuspecting town. These frogs know how to have
fun--startling the occasional bird, waving webbed feet at
late-night snack-eaters, and even changing the channels on a
sleeping granny's television. As day breaks, the frogs lose
their lily pads, head back to the pond, and wait impatiently
for their next scheduled departure.
Tuesday won the 1992 Caldecott Medal and, among other
honors, was named as an ALA Notable Children's Book. The
critical acclaim will come as no surprise to anyone who
opens the pages of this beautiful and humorous book. With
hardly any words (except those noting the time), David
Wiesner creates a wondrous romp as silent as the middle of
the night. Using the rich purples, blues, and greens of late
evening, Wiesner draws readers into the warm, incandescent
world of frog flight. "Read" this wordless wonder to
children and savor it for yourself as well. Chances are, you
and the youngsters will both find yourselves poised at the
window, hoping to catch a few airborne frogs in the act.

Stellaluna
by Janell
Cannon |
Editorial Reviews-Amazon.com
Baby bat Stellaluna's life is flitting along right on
schedule--until an owl attacks her mother one night,
knocking the bewildered batlet out of her mother's loving
grasp. The tiny bat is lucky enough to land in a nest of
baby birds, but her whole world has just turned upside down.
Literally. Stellaluna's adoptive bird mom accepts her into
her nest, but only on the condition that Stellaluna will act
like a bird, not a bat. Soon Stellaluna has learned to
behave like a good bird should--she quits hanging by her
feet and starts eating bugs. But when she finally has an
opportunity to show her bird siblings what life as a bat is
like, all of them are confounded. "How can we be so
different and feel so much alike?" one asks. "And how can we
feel so different and be so much alike?" asks another. "I
agree," Stellaluna responds. "But we're friends. And that's
a fact." Anyone who has ever been asked to be someone
they're not will understand the conflicts--and
possibilities--Stellaluna faces. This gorgeously illustrated
book is sure to be an all-time favorite with readers,
whether they've left the nest or not. (Click to see a sample

Make Way for Ducklings
by Robert
McCloskey |
Editorial Reviews-Amazon.com
It's not easy for duck parents to find a safe place
to bring up their ducklings, but during a rest stop in
Boston's Public Garden, Mr. and Mrs. Mallard think they just
might have found the perfect spot--no foxes or turtles in
sight, plenty of peanuts from pleasant passers-by, and the
benevolent instincts of a kindly police officer to boot.
Young readers will love the mother duck's proud, loving
protection of her wee webbed ones, and those with fond
memories of Boston will enjoy familiar locales, from Beacon
Hill to Louisburg Square, and over the Charles River--often
from a duck's-eye view. Robert McCloskey, creator of
Blueberries for Sal, never fails to elicit happy story-time
giggles from youngsters, and his soft, brown-toned,
Caldecott-winning illustrations make this gentle world come
alive. (Ages 3 to 8) --Karin Snelson --This text refers to

Colors
by Robert Crowther
(Illustrator) |
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Robert Crowther, acknowledged
master of paper engineering, takes on a new challenge--and
passes with flying colors. In this clever book, very young
readers are invited to contemplate color. Each two-page
spread is a solid expanse of red, yellow, pink, etc. But
look closely, and discover tabs and flaps that, when opened,
reveal an array of similarly colored critters and objects.
Pull one yellow tab and a big bold sign appears, announcing
"yellow." Pull another tab, and six windows are suddenly
filled with the sun, a lemon, a sandcastle, an egg yolk, a
daffodil, a banana--there's even a canary perched on the
tab. But wait, there's more! Two additional flaps can be
lifted to uncover chicks and a stick of butter. Red, green,
pink, blue, orange, white, and black are similarly explored,
with little windows that can also help young readers learn
about shapes. Find 80 hidden pictures with 30 flaps and tabs
in this interactive celebration of color.

5 Green and Speckled Frogs
by Martin Kelly, Phil Legris
|
Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Though these two vibrant titles have a fair amount
of text, they are based on well-known songs, so they may be
familiar to the intended audience. Both combine photography
and computer graphics that at times look surreal. In one
sequence in the first book, a bright pink door occupies
center page as ants march through it, while four
black-and-white cows, at various distances and angles, gaze
placidly at readers. There are some clever visual effects in
Frogs. On one page, the little creatures are shown half out
of the water but their underwater bodies are clearly visible
through a veil of light blue "water." Most of the
computer-enhanced frogs look fake but they and the various
insects around them are nevertheless appealing. The text
color changes for each stanza as does the background on
every spread. Good additions to board-book baskets,
especially for fans of frogs, insects, and animals.

Maisy Goes to the Playground (Pull Tab & Lift-The-Flap Book)
by Lucy Cousins, Farlow |
Editorial Reviews:
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K-- As in Maisy Goes to Bed and Maisy Goes
Swimming (both Little, 1990), the engaging young mouse
enjoys typical childhood activities in these adventures .
While attending preschool, Maisy paints, plays in a
playhouse, writes a story, and dresses up. At the
playground, she slides down a slide, wades in a pool,
swings, and plays in a sandbox. Cartoon illustrations
include a combination of strong and primary colors. Bold,
heavy contour lines are used for definition. Each action or
activity is given a double-page spread with the text filling
most of the white space. Children will be drawn to the
``lift-the-flap'' and ``pull-the-tab'' format, which is
similar to Hill's ``Spot'' (Putnam) books.

Baby Days: Activities, Ideas, and Games for Enjoying Daily
Life With a Child Under Three
by Barbara Rowley |
Customer Review: March
29, 2000
Reviewer: editor@vegetarianbaby.com from Tuolumne, CA
I want to be like Barbara Rowley whose book Baby Days is a
record of her life with her daughter Anna during their first
three years together. Barbara has made a career out of
devising great ways to have fun with kids. The terrific
thing about this book is that it's organized by type of
activity and age. What harried parent hasn't thought, "oh
sure, finger painting is wonderful, but what I really need
is something to keep her busy while I'm cooking dinner."
That's where Baby Days comes in.
There are chapters for leisurely morning activities, meal
and naptime ideas, and even sections on what to do in the
car or on the plane. Each chapter's activities are also
grouped by age, so it's easy to find something that will
work for you and your child. Add to that the "prep time" and
"messiness quotient" listings and you've got a recipe for
success! Best of all, many of the activities only require a
little energy and imagination or items usually found around
the house. There's truly something here for everyone. This
book inspired me to set up a reading nook (it's SO much more
fun to read in a tent while lounging on pillows!) create a
special hideaway and an activity box and put together a
craft cupboard, among many other things. If those long days
at home have got you down, it's time to get out of the baby
daze and get this book!

Baby Minds: Brain-Building Games Your Baby Will Love
by Linda, Ph.D. Acredolo, Susan, Ph.D.
Goodwyn |
Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Acredolo and Goodwyn, child development psychologists and
coauthors of the acclaimed Baby Signs, have teamed up again
to assist parents in teaching their infants from birth to 36
months of age. Their goal is to take state-of-the-art
research and translate it into pragmatic techniques for
fostering child development in the areas of problem solving,
talking, reading, and math preparation. The authors'
philosophy is well articulated in their statement on baby
education classes: "If your baby is not having fun, it's
probably not worth doing." Their work differs from other
baby-game books, such as Elaine Martin's Baby Games (1988),
in that it is not simply a laundry list of nursery rhymes,
recipes, and action plays. Rather, it addresses broader
developmental concepts and provides more open-ended
questions and activities to stimulate learning. However,
they do include a brief yet useful "Tips Revisited" section
that outlines age-appropriate techniques. Recommended for
both public and academic libraries.DLisa Williams, Moline

Sign With Your Baby Complete Learning Kit (ASL-based Book,
Training Video & Quick Reference Guide combination)
by Joseph Garcia |
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Sign with Your Baby Complete Learning Kit will enable you to
communicate at new levels with your baby long before she can
speak. This comprehensive package of book, video, and
reference guide shows how simple gestures can communicate
ideas like "I'm hungry" or "help me." Caregivers grasp
baby's needs immediately rather than learn through trial and
error. Dr. Joseph Garcia has designed the system so it's not
necessary to learn an entire new language, although it also
provides a terrific start in American Sign Language for a
hearing-impaired child. A fascinating introduction delves
into the development of language in children and uses
informative line drawings to demonstrate over 150 hand signs
for all kinds of actions and nouns. The accompanying video
provides practical tips for getting started, some insight
into the hows and whys of this method from Dr. Burton White
(director of the Center for Parent Education), and inspiring
sights of young babies signing effectively with their
caregivers. The laminated quick-reference guide lists some
of the most common words in any parent's day: cookie, no,
and up are but a few. Garcia's clear, concise methods make
learning a breeze, and caregivers gain outstanding new
abilities to give the best possible care for the babies
entrusted to them. --Jill Lightner

Baby Signs: How to Talk with Your Baby Before Your Baby Can
Talk, New Edition
by Linda Acredolo, Susan Goodwyn,
Douglas Abrams |
Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
After studying baby sign language with a grant from the
National Institutes of Health, Acredelo (psychology, Univ.
of California, Davis) and Goldwyn (psychology, California
State Univ., Stanislaus) conclude that babies who are taught
to use signs to express basic ideas (e.g., fingers to the
lips for eat, fingers raised in a V for bunny) before they
can say the words are both happier because they can
communicate with others and more adept at speaking once they
begin to acquire language. This is not a scholarly exegesis
of their findings but a practical, easy-to-use guide to
teaching baby signs. The authors begin with an explanation
of their findings and then offer a portfolio of suggested
signs in which simple pictures are accompanied by
description, memory aid, and suggested situations for use.
The book has an upbeat, encouraging tone that parents will
appreciate. Interestingly, Parenting magazine cited the
authors' study in the "News and Reviews" section of the May
1996 issue?but failed to mention this book! For all
parenting collections.?Barbara Hoffert, "Library Journal"
