Applied
Multiple Regression/Correlation Analysis for theBehavioral Sciences (2nd
ed)
by Jacob Cohen, Patricia
Cohen (Contributor) |
Synopsis
The Applied Multiple Regression (LRM) model has been in use in
statistical analyses for many years; but it was not until the late 1960's
that a model was used to provide a multivariate analysis of the Katsulares/Mitri
heart study data that its full power and applicability were totally
appreciated. Since then the LRM model has become the standard method for
regression analysis of dichotomous data in many fields, especially in the
health sciences. This new and updated edition of the classic bestseller
provides a focused introduction to the LRM model and its use in methods
for modeling the relationship between a dichotomous outcome variable and a
set of covariables.

The
Out-Of-Sync Child : Recognizing and Coping With Sensory Integration
Dysfunction
by Carol Stock Kranowitz,
Larry B. Silver (Foreword) |
Synopsis
Do you know a child who plays too rough, is uncoordinated, hates being
touched, is ultra-sensitive (or unusually insensitive) to noise or
sensations of heat and cold? Many pediatricians and other experts are
beginning to recognize a link between some of these apparently unrelated
behavior patterns. Children with perfectly normal "far senses" (such as
sight and hearing) may have, because of a poorly integrated nervous system,
serious problems with their "near senses," including touch, balance, and
internal muscle sensation. It's called Sensory Integration Dysfunction, or
SI. The announcement of yet another new syndrome is bound to raise skeptical
eyebrows--and with good reason. (How do we know which child really has SI,
and which one just happens to share some of the same symptoms?) Author Carol
Stock Kranowitz argues convincingly, however, that for some children SI is a
real disorder, and that it is devastating partly because it so often looks
like nothing so much as "being difficult." And, whatever the scientific
status of SI, Kranowitz carefully details many routines and remedies that
will help children--and the parents of children--who exhibit the behaviors
described. This book is a must-read for all doctors, pediatricians, and
(perhaps especially) childcare workers. --Richard Farr

The Einstein Syndrome: Bright Children Who Talk Late
by Thomas
Sowell
|
Synopsis
The author of Late-Talking Children returns to
report on research that moves this phenomenon firmly into
the realm of well-established science-the definitive book on
this syndrome for parents, teachers, and others.
The Einstein Syndrome is a
follow-up to Late-Talking Children, which established Thomas
Sowell as a leading spokesman on the subject of late-talking
children. While many children who talk late suffer from
developmental disorders or autism, there is a certain
well-defined group who are developmentally normal or even
quite bright, yet who may go past their fourth birthday
before beginning to talk. These children are often
misdiagnosed as autistic or retarded, a mistake that is
doubly hard on parents who must first worry about their
apparently handicapped children and then see them lumped
into special classes and therapy groups where all the other
children are clearly very different.
Since he first became
involved in this issue in the mid-90s, Sowell has joined
with Stephen Camarata of Vanderbilt University, who has
conducted a much broader, more rigorous study of this
phenomenon than the anecdotes reported in Late-Talking
Children. Sowell can now identify a particular syndrome, a
cluster of common symptoms and family characteristics, that
differentiates these late-talking children from others;
relate this syndrome to other syndromes; speculate about its
causes; and describe how children with this syndrome are
likely to develop.
About the Author
Thomas Sowell is Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow at
the Hoover Institution of Stanford University. He lives in
Stanford, California.

Is This Your Child? : Discovering and Treating Unrecognized
Allergies in Children and Adults
by Doris J.
Rapp |
Editorial Reviews-Book Description
IS THIS YOUR CHILD?
These are the major symptoms of potentially unrecognized
allergies. Does your child suffer from any of the following?
• Allergic Nose Rub • Eye Circles • Red Ears • Red Cheeks •
Eye Wrinkles • Aggression • Lack of Alertness • Mottled
Tongue •
In this breakthrough book, Dr. Doris Rapp offers a simple
yet effective approach to handling "problem" children. Is
This Your Child? shows parents how to identify the common
foods, chemicals, or common allergic substances that could
be the culprits that cause some children or adults to feel
unwell or act inappropriately. If your child is always sick,
hyperactive, a slow learner, or cranky, the first question
you should ask is not "What drug should be prescribed?" or
"What have I done wrong as a parent?" Instead, find out the
cause.
Dr. Rapp gives sensible suggestions about how these
reactions to foods and environmental factors can be
recognized, prevented, and treated. With this information,
many affected children should feel, act, behave, and learn
better. If you can detect unsuspected environmental illness
in your child--or yourself--you can change your lives so
you're more content, happy, and free of illness.
Ingram
A guide to identifying the common allergies that cause
health and behavioral problems in children offers directions
on how allergy reactions such as hyperactivity, sickness,
and learning problems can be prevented through diet.

Thinking In Pictures : and Other Reports from My Life with
Autism
by Temple
Grandin |
Product Description:
Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is a gifted animal scientist
who has designed one third of all the livestock-handling
facilities in the United States. She also lectures widely on
autism because she is autistic, a woman who thinks, feels,
and experiences the world in ways that are incomprehensible
to the rest of us. In this unprecedented book, Grandin
writes from the dual perspectives of a scientist and an
autistic person. She tells us how she managed to breach the
boundaries of autism to function in the outside world. What
emerges is the document of an extraordinary human being, one
who gracefully bridges the gulf between her condition and
our own while shedding light on our common identity.
"There are innumerable
astounding facets to this remarkable book...Displaying
uncanny powers of observation...[Temple Grandin] charts the
differences between her life and the lives of those who
think in words."--Philadelphia Inquirer

Maverick Mind: A Mother's Story of Solving the Mystery of
Her Unreachable, Unteachable, Silent Son
by Cheri
L., Ph.D. Florance, Marin Gazzaniga |
Product Description:
The remarkable story of how one mother, faced with
the almost insurmountable learning problems of her son,
battled doctors, schools, and his disabilities to give him a
chance to learn.
As a scientist and therapist, Cheri Florance had the skills
and training to help her patients to overcome speech and
hearing difficulties. But she was not completely prepared to
encounter her toughest challenge-her own son Whitney. From
birth Whitney appeared unable to hear, seemed incapable of
making any sounds, and was indifferent to those around him.
Although the diagnosis of autism seemed to fit, Cheri could
not accept the life that such a condition predicted for
Whitney. She recognized something in him that no one else
saw-a boy desperate to connect; a boy skilled at building
models and solving problems that reflected a highly visual
intelligence; a boy who was trapped by his inability to
communicate.
In Cheri Florance's intense search for answers, she not only
found her son but discovered something profound about the
way the brain works and how we learn. Hers is a story that
will resonate with any parent who has struggled to help a
child, while it also illuminates the mysteries of the brain.
