My daughter will be turning 5 in March. But she has been in speech therapy for 2 years. She has delayed speech. She is about 2 years behind with her speech. I am not liking the school program so I have recently tried children's. And now they say she is also a year behind her understanding what is said to her. She also plays parallel with other kids, she has improved and will play with kids for about 5 min to 10 min but then will play by herself again. She is extremely shy at times but not always. She us to have tantrums, but now they only happen when she is tired, and not always. She is considered extremely smart, but has a hard time recognizing letters and numbers. But can say them and count to 20. She can spell and right her name but has a hard time identifying the letters when u write them out of her name. I am starting to wonder if the could be dyslexia. But everyone tells me that wont be diagnosed until 2 grade. And they aren't the signs. She has finally got her colors down it took until now with everyone help. But that was a struggle too. I want to help her. But don't know what this all could mean. I was wondering if anyone had ideas. That won't retest her until oct of this year. She will be in kindergarten by then. I don't want her made fun of. Some one please help my daughter and me to help her.
Thanks

Hello,

I can tell that you really want to help your daughter so she is ready to do as well as possible when she starts kindergarten. You have about 6 months until then, right?

It sounds like you took her for an evaluation at Children's Hospital. Were you provided with a lot of suggestions that you can implement? Can you take your daughter there for some therapy sessions?

You mentioned that you learned from that evaluation that your daughter has difficulty understanding language at her age level. You can help her by making sure she understands what you are saying, every time you talk with her. If she doesn't understand something, try repeating it first. Then, if needed, say it a different way. Add some gestures (point things out) if needed. Once she understands, then say your first statement again as part of your praise. "Good! You ...."

Do you and your daughter use books daily? I heartily recommend "talking a book" which involves describing what is happening in the pictures and pointing out details. You can create your own stories. Take turns. You can do this before, during, or after, or instead of reading the story.

I have written a lot about things parents can do to help their children learn to talk better (and understand and use language better). You can search for my many posts on this site and/or consider purchasing my e-book which is quite comprehensive. I urge you to make the most of your next 6 months!
