First let me say this might be long, but I wanted to find out if anyone has experienced anything similar. My son who was born at 34 weeks, I had a normal pregnancy till my water broke for No reason. He was developing normal then after his 2 month well checkup the Dr noticed his head shape was larger then should be. She noticed it was pushing out in front and back and that his eyes didn't seem to line up. She then then noticed that his soft spot was already almost closed and referred have to go to children's hospital and have a ct done. So We did and found out his saginal sutures were closing. Long story short he had surgery at 4 months to remove parts of his skull. We found out that the antheisologist gave him another dose of fentinal after surgery and had to bag breath him twice! He spent 3 days in the icu. He had to wear a helmet for about a year to correct his head shape. He never hit his milestones when he should. The Dr's said it was cause he was a premie. He didn't walk till he was a year and half old. So We looked into an early interventions program for him. For about a year now he has been having 2 people come once a week to work with him on speech. His speech is mostly eh eh sounds and he points. He can say ma ma and sometimes da da. He knows who family members are and seems like he understands what you say to him. He has a high pitch tone when he runs around playing and eh ehing. But once and a great while his tone will get really low and he will say a 3 or 4 word sentence. It's muffled but We can make out what he said. But if you ask him to repeat it he won't.
We have also noticed about a year ago he started to randomly lay on his right side and gets in fetal position. He will bring his legs up and they bounce up and down you can see his stomach muscles flexing and his head is usually back and stares. He appears to be having a seizure but if you talk to him he will snap right out of it. They can last from seconds to as long as 10 minutes. We brought it up to the Dr and for months they said it was a soothing thing cause at first he only did it when he was tired. Well it became more and more so they again referred us to a neurologist at children's hospital and he had an eeg done that showed spikes in his right frontal lobe. So then he wanted an MRI and a 24 hour video eeg done. The MRI showed white spots. And he said the 24 hour eeg came back normal. We have an apt Feb 1at with the neurologist to get more detailed results. He was going with our son being epileptic but We are not sure that is still the case. I don't know if they caught an episode on video. I know while We were with him he did not do one. I'm thinking he might of done one in the am while We were sleeping. But, I have Google's a lot about his symptoms and things. I don't believe or put kaden in the things I read. I just like to know our options of what is possible. So I wanted to see if there is anyone out there that has experienced anything similar and share their experience and the out come. Thank you for taking the time to read and share any advice or experiences.

Hello, It sounds like you are being very proactive about scheduling visits with the neurologist and getting MRIs, etc. Definitely stay current with the medical pursuit of understanding your son's neurological issues. In terms of your son's therapy, I would urge you to be working on production of functional words (that would be highly useful to your son in daily interactions with you). I hope you are all working on getting imitation of individual speech sounds. Are you using some AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) methods such as sign language or picture symbols? Your son needs an expressive outlet. What is your son's play like? Best wishes to you and your son! Mary Lou Mary Lou B. Johnson, M.S.,CCC-SLP

Mary Lou, Yes We use sign language with our son he has been using signs like please, more, and night night. We have tried other ones but he's not willing to use them. We will do the sign and say it also then help him do the sign and give him what he signed for. We are in the process of making him a picture book. I am taking pictures of his things so it us more familiar to him. He plays very well with himself and his brother who is older and he just loves his baby sister. He hasn't really had to many interactions. With other kids in a daycare but after he warms up he will play with friends. He is very shy at first when someone new is around and even at stores or Dr apts he dose not like strangers to talk to him he will yell or try to smack them. Mostly adult strangers. And a stranger definitely cannot touch him, he will really scream. Or if someone shows up at the house that We aren't expecting he will run to me and cry when he hears the knock at the door.
We are doing everything We can to encourage him to be vocal. He can understand commands and he is very smart. We even have a hearing test scheduled just to make sure he's not just hearing certain pitches and such. Thank you, Cryatal

You are very wise to get your son's hearing tested. Did he have a newborn hearing screening? Has your son ever been tested by a developmental pediatrician? Such an evaluation could contribute significantly to your understanding of your son's needs. Best wishes to you. Mary Lou B. Johnson, M.S.,CCC-SLP

He passed the newborn screening. I'll have to look into that kind of specialist after his apt next week. Thank you for the advice!
