I have worried about my little boys speech for some time now, as he seems to be behind that of most children his age.
However, recently I have seen a vast improvement in his speech at home but I am concerned as I have watched him at play school and he seems to become almost silent! His key worker says he is very quiet but he will say a few words to her. It is most peculiar because as soon as we are a few minutes walk away from playschool, he starts chatting away to me again. Is he unhappy at playschool, shy or is it something more serious?

Any advice welcomed.

Hello there- you didnt say what age your child is but I am assuming that he is young- maybe preschool age since you say he attends a playschool. That is great that his speech is improving!! It is hard to determine without actually evaluating your son if there is an actual problem. It could be that he is shy or that he is developing speech skills but is not yet ready or comfortable to carry over those skills to a school environment. My own daughter had very good speech skills but often spoke very little in school until she was very comfortable. I would definitely keep close watch on how his speech is improving at home, keep stimulating your son by encouraging him to ask for things, reading, and labeling. Also keep in contact with the school and see if things are improving. It might be that your son just needs more time to feel comfortable. I was also wondering if your son speaks/communicates when he is around other children/unfamiliar people in general. I wasnt sure how many kids were in the class,etc- perhaps having some play dates with just one other child might make your son more comfortable- ex- ease him into speaking with other children, unfamiliar people, etc. If you are still having concerns I would recommend having him evaluated by a Speech Language Pathologist. I hope this helps! G luck!!

Thank you for your response. Yes he is young, he is 2yrs 3mths and speaks well with my friends children but I guess maybe it's because he is used to them. He does tend to be shy even with people he has known from birth, it usually only lasts 10mins. Hopefully it's just a confidence thing. Will keep an eye on it.
