Hello,
Here is my question: Does anyone know of a particular author or scheme of books that are aimed at young children, which use simple sentences and simple storylines?
I have a 4 year old son with mild to moderate receptive and expressive delay. He enjoys being read to and talking about the pictures, but he is not able to tell me what is happening in the story, with very poor comprehension. We go to the library often, but I end up spending a long time sifting through books to find one that doesn't use complex sentences and uncommon/difficult vocabulary, and books with a simple story line. I find that some books have really abstract themes or wacky/mixed up ideas that are supposed to be funny- but he doesn't get the joke and just ends up more confused!! I have tried toddler/baby books with short simple sentences, but the stories are not stimulating enough for him. I usually get picture books and change the sentences as I am reading aloud to make the text simple for him to better understand. But at this age I would like him to start looking at the words as I read to begin building his sight vocabulary.
I have contacted my local speech and language therapy unit- who were unable to recommend reading books and said that they also just adjust the text when reading aloud to make it more easy to understand.
I would appreciate any help, or suggestions. Thanks for reading.

I would suggest that you find "early readers" to use with your son. I'm not sure what they are called in the UK - but in the US they might be listed as "I can read" or "level 1" or "early reader". These would be the books that they use when children are learning to read. There are hundreds of titles. This is a link from Amazon.com for a particular series about a dog named biscuit...http://www.amazon.com/Biscuit-Goes-School-First-Read/dp/0064436160/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1282434502&sr=8-2 These books are designed for beginning readers so the vocabulary is very basic but the pictures are good so you have something to chat about. There are Usborne books - http://www.amazon.com/Frog-Log-Usborne-Phonics-Readers/dp/0794515045/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282434664&sr=1-3 which are outstanding. We loved Maisy at our house - Lucy Cousins' books have bright colorful pictures and very plain vocabulary. I would ask at your local library - the librarian should be able to show you where all the early reader books are located. They would have good pictures to keep your son interested but simple enough vocabulary that he can understand. And early readers avoid the crazy ideas because new readers are easily confused too!
